How to Spot Palm Oil

by David Bass |

The thing about products that contain palm oil is that they don’t come right out and put a big label on the front that says “contains palm oil.” If you want to know whether something has palm oil in it, you often have to hunt for it in the ingredient list, and it is not always easy to spot. Below are some key ingredients to watch out for when you’re making an effort to keep your bathroom palm oil free.

Sometimes, palm oil is easy to spot, because it has the word “palm” right in the name of the ingredient, such as:

  • PKO stands for Palm Kernel Oil
  • PKS stands for Palm Kernel Stearin
  • Palmitate
  • Absorbyl Palmitate
  • Palmate
  • Partially Hydrogenated Palm Oil
  • Organic Palm Kernel Oil
  • Fractionated Palm Oil

Other palm oil derivatives are sneakier and hide behind names like:

  • Sodium Lauryl Sulphates
  • Vegetable fat
  • Glyceryl Stearate
  • Saturated Fatty Acid
  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin E
  • Elaeis Guineesis
  • Sulphate

Finally, if you want to be sure that something is free of palm oil before you buy it, you can always reach out to the manufacturer and ask them to confirm that their product is palm-free.

Another way to avoid palm oil: opt for products from companies that put “palm-free” right on the label, like we do!
